Potty Training Secrets

Be prepared for the process to take time, possibly even years. Is the child afraid of the toilet or potty? If so, the first thing is to get them used to sitting on it with their clothes on, like it was a chair to show them it is safe. You sit on it then invite them to sit on it. If they have a sibling, let them sit on it if possible. Don’t make a fuss if they don’t want to sit, just invite them to once or twice a day.
Let them see you go to the bathroom on the toilet, and invite them to use it, but don’t push the issue. The more you push the more they will resist, because this is something they control, not you.
When they can sit on the potty dressed, have them sit on it without their clothes or diaper. If they happen to go, make a big deal of it, but if they don’t, do not say anything negative. Redress them and say maybe next time.
Like you potty train any other child! Encourage sitting with rewards, something related to a special interest or a stim that they really enjoy (don’t withhold the stim to get them to sit however, this will have the opposite of the desired effect).
Ask them why they don’t want to sit. Is it too cold? Does the texture bother them? Are they just too impatient to sit and wait? The answer to your question will depend on your child’s answer to the above. Once you see what the root cause of the problem is, then you can return to potty training.
